When I first read “ I, Too,” my first impression was what was going on in the poem because I didn’t understand anything that I was reading. But as I kept on reading it, I knew it had something to do with African Americans because it says, “ I am the darker brother” in the second line of the poem. I also knew it had something related to an African America because the first line of the poem was, “ I, too, sing America.” I had to read it five times to understand what the narrator was saying in the poem.
It took me a while to understand the narrator’s tone of anger and seeking of acceptance because he was part of something that didn’t want him and treated him differently because of his skin color. I realized that “I, Too” at the beginning of the poem stated that the narrator hopes and believes that one day, the discrimination towards the black community will come to an end. You can see this from the third stanza of the poem following the line “ Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table, When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, “Eat in the kitchen,” Then. Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed.” it shows that there is still hope for the African America community that everything is going to be alright.  They should give it time and have faith.
I like how the poem was short but powerful. I also like how, at the beginning of the poem, the narrator’s tone was anger and seeking acceptance that he is part of the African American community. Then towards the end of the poem, there was hope for the community to be treated the same. Then they will accept them and their skin color in America. I like how this poem is old but still powerful now. I love how there were only four stanzas in the poem and how each line was different.
Questions that I would like to ask the poet and get answers. The first question will be what inspired him or her to write this poem. The second question will be what was people’s reaction to this. The third question will be did  him or her see any change in the African America community after the poem was published. The fourth question will be how long did it take him or her to write this poem.
